"Cancel Netflix"? Why the internet dispute between Elon Musk and the streaming behemoth got viral

Elon Musk, the CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, stepped up calls to shut down Netflix throughout this week with a barrage of postings (and responses) on X.

‘Dead End: Paranormal Park’ is a Netflix animated horror series that he criticised.

Among other derogatory remarks, the London-based animator referred to Charlie Kirk, a Trump supporter and dead conservative activist, as a “nazi” in a BlueSky post just last month.

On September 10, Charlie Kirk passed away following a single gunshot wound to the neck while making a public engagement at a university in Utah.

The argument then shifted to Netflix’s programming, LGBTQ agenda, and hiring practices after Musk reposted and responded to a post on X that claimed Steele’s show was also “pushing” pro-transgender content on kids.

Steele responded to Musk in a BlueSky post, featuring a snapshot of Musk’s anti-Netflix posts. “It’s probably going to be a very odd day,” Steele wrote.

Musk typed “Cancel Netflix” in a single post. He urged internet users to do it “for the health of your kids” in another post, alluding to a purported “transgender woke agenda” being forced on minors.

The wealthiest billionaire in the world has frequently spoken out against what he refers to as the “woke mind virus.”

The ‘Cancel Netflix’ debate, spearheaded by Musk, follows weeks after Reed Hastings, a co-founder of the streaming behemoth, gave $2 million to a campaign that backed California Governor (and Democrat) Gavin Newsom’s redistricting efforts.

MAGA fans publicly pledged to cancel their Netflix subscriptions in protest as the donation swiftly started a “cancel Netflix” trend on X.
