A BJP office and a police car are set on fire during a violent demonstration in Ladakh over demands for statehood.

Following the violent demonstration for Ladakh statehood, violence broke out in the Leh region on Wednesday. The week-long demonstration, spearheaded by the Leh Apex Body (LAB), descended into violence as agitators battled with police and set fire to a police station and the BJP office.

The LAB’s youth wing has been backing activist Sonam Wangchuk’s demonstration, which calls for negotiations with the Centre on statehood and the extension of the Sixth Schedule to Ladakh. The event occurred just before a new round of negotiations between representatives from the Centre and Ladakh, including members of the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) and LAB, is set on October 6.

In light of the shutdown that the demonstrators had been witnessing on Wednesday, a march was held. But when they started throwing stones at the BJP office, it descended into violence. In order to disperse the hostile masses, police used lathi-charging and tear gas shelling.

To regain order, more troops have been sent in.
